HOLIDAY FOR POOR

MISSION CAMP HOUSE AT ONEROA BUILDING NEARS COMPLETION The summer camp house being erected at Oneroa, Waiheke Island, by the Auckland City Mission for the purpose of giving poor children from the congested city areas a holiday, is nearing completion. It is intended tha: a party of 60 children will leave on December 27 for two weeks’ stay at the island. Over the week-end since late in October working bees from the mission, under the supervision of Mr. W, Torcker, foreman of the men’s guild, have worked on the house, which is spacious and is ideal for a summer beach residence. The site has been well chosen, as there are many safe bathing places and other attractions for children. It is the intention of the mission to teach many of the children to swim during their holiday. Every attention has been given to coprfort, for each child will sleep at night in a built-in bunk in one of the two large dormitories. One of the mission’s motor-lorries has been temporarily converted into a bus for the purpose of taking picnic parties to various points of interest on the island. Immediately the first party of 6'> has completed its holiday, a second party will visit the camp, and it is intended to give more than 150 children a holiday at the island. While the duration of each child’s holiday is nominally two weeks, sick children will make longer stays.
