MORE WATER FOR CITY
HUIA DAM OPENED TODAY BY THE MAYOR CEREMONY AT WAITAKERE The new Huia dam was officially opened’ today by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. Baildon, who in the presence of members of the City Council and of other local bodies turned the valve which released the flow to the city mains. A long procession of motor-cars left the City early this morning for the Waitakere Ranges, where a picnic was enjoyed in the bush. The ceremony included the handing over of the completed work by the chairman of the Works Committee, Cr. J. Dempsey, to the chairman of the Waterworks Committee, Cr. A. J. Entrican. The Huia dam will be the last undertaking of the kind to be handled by the Works Committee, the council having decided that in future all capital works will he borne by the department immediately concerned. The City need not fear a water shortage even in a drought, as all four dams are full to capacity, the total water in store being 1,500,000,000 gallons, exclusive of 3,000,000 gallons of running water available daily. Auckland can therefore draw the large quantity of 18,000,000 gallons a day for 100 days, even in the event of there being no rain during the period.
