MOTOR UNION CONFERS

NATIONALISATION OF MAIN ROADS DISCUSSED UNIFORM PETROL PRICES Press Association DUNEDIN, Today. The quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union was held yesterday. Mr. A. E. Ansell, M.P., presided. The following remit was carried: | “That an effort be made to secure : uniform prices for the wholesale and 1 retail sal© of motor spirit throughout I distributing districts.” At a. later stage of the meeting the matter of ' petrol prices was again brought up by Mr. Halliday, and it was decided |to communicate with the Department ; of Industries and Commerce asking it ! to investigate the matter. It was resolved: “That it be made an offence under the motor regulations i to leave broken glass or other material , on roads, such material being likely ’ to cause damage to the tyres of motor • vehicles.” This suggestion was made with the idea of eliminating the exist- ; ing practice of broken glass being left |on roads either deliberately or I through carelessness. ; The executive was recommended to consider a numbering system of distinguishing main routes, and to submit an estimate of the probable cost. The South Canterbury association forwarded a resolution advocating that ! all main arterial roads should be nationalised and controlled by the Highways Board. The chairman said he doubted whether the proposal was practicable. It was a matter for agreement between the Highways Board and the counties. It was decided to give further consideration to the matter at the next meeting. The matter of compulsory stop signals at railway crossings was discussed. These were stated to oe erected at many places where they were unnecessary, and this led to carelessness. In the opinion of Mr. Ansell the policy of the Railways Department should be reviewed in th.-s I respect, and it was decided to recom- | mend that this be done.
