LOST WINDJAMMER

WRECK OF GARTHPOOL DESCRIBED

SURVIVORS REACH LONDON (United P.A. —i».v Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. When the survivors of the Garthpool arrived at. Plymouth from the Cape Verde Islands in the Avalona Star, the passengers graphically described the last moments of one of Britain's last windjammers. The Garthpool was under fuli sail, doing 12 knots, when those on board sighted the Bonavista rocks in hazy weather; but it was thought that she was on. a safe course. Owing to the presence of a neighbouring steamer, which was also aground, the canvas was taken off immediately; but the vessel struck, and she was soon rolling heavily, necessitating taking to the boats and anchoring all night in calm water. In the morning natives piloted the weary survivors to the land. They clambered ashore to remain foodless for 48 hours. The crew, on revisiting the Garthpool, found the natives had ransacked her, stealing all the clothing.
