HURRICANE HITTING

A COUPLE of cases of lightning fast inningses reported in the Auckland Province last week-end, supplies an excuse for dipping into Wisden and other cricket records for one or two classic examples of fast and furious batting. Gilbert Jessop, probably the most phenomenal hitter the game has known, once scored 191 in 90 minutes in a match. Gentlemen of the South v. Players of the South, in 1907. Off one over (six ball) from A. E. Relf, Auckland’s first English coach, he made 26 runs by means of five fours and one six.

On a bad wicket in Sydney years ago. Frank Laver, the Victorian skipper, sent New South Wales in to bat. Victor Trumper opened the innings, and scored 101 in 60 minutes.

For Notts against Sussex in 1911, E. Alletson started off sedately with 50 runs in the first hour. Then he suddenly cut loose on the bowling, scored his second 50 in 15 minutes, and wound up with 89 more in a quarter of an hour. In 90 minutes, he thus scored 189 runs!
