Bridson’s Second Win

BREAKS NEW ZEALAND TIME

Ryan and Griffiths Lose

FOLLOWING his win from Noel Ryan, Australian champion distance swimmer, over a quarter-mile, the New Zealand middle-distance champion, Gordon Bridson again defeated the Australian at the Tepid Baths last evening in the halfmile event. In doing so, Bridson created a New Zealand record of 11.21 3-5.

It was a bad evening for the Sydney visitors. By his being headed home by Bridson by ISyds, Ryan was again shown to be below his known form. On top of Ryan's defeat, Owen Griffiths, New South AVales 220yds champion, was beaten in a spectacular 50yds race by J. P. Farrell, the Auckland sprint champion. Griffiths won easily the previous evening over lOOyds, but Farrell, with the promising colt, A. AV. Raper, proved to be stronger opponents in the shorter distance. Bridson’s success was loudly acclaimed and Ryan was the first to acknowledge the Aucklander’s good effort. Bridson lowered the existing New Zealand half-mile record, 11m 25 3-ss, established by D. P. Lindsay (AVaitemata), by exactly four .seconds. He has quickly reached record-break-ing - form this season; last week, lie set a New Zealand record for 440yds, this week he has defeated the Australian champion in two events and has made another new time. Ryan’s best time for the half-mile 11m 2s, made last season, is much ahead of Bridson’s. but the young Australian is not completely in training. Bridson’s fitness again told last evening, and it would have been better had Ryan raced the Aucklander after receiving the benefit of the tour. The attendance, for an appearance of overseas swimmers, was extremely poor. With receipts to be paid to the

New. Zealand Council, which fixed the tour, the Auckland Swimming Centre will lose financially on the two carnivals. The position may have been improved by arranging the second carnival after the Australians’ trip to North Auckland. Details of the principal events: 880YDS INVITATION SCRATCH RACE G. Bridson (Grammar) 1 N. Ryan (New South AVales) .... 2 Time, 11m 21 3-5 s (New Zealand record). Ryan set out quickly and, after a fast first lap, led Bridson slightly. The Aucklander drew level and, from the 200yds mark, increased his lead steadily with deliberate strokes. At 600yds, Bridson had an advantage of nearly half a length from Ryan, who swam doggedly with a much quicker action than the Aucklander. Bridson was 16yds in front at 700yds and nearly two-thirds of a length at 800. Ryan, by determined swimming, was within 18yds of Bridson when the Aucklander touched the rope. Sectional times for the race were:—First lOOyds, 63 4-ss; second, 71 4-ss; third. 76 3-ss; fourth, 79 2-ss; fifth, 81 2-ss; sixth, 83 l-ss; seventh, 82s; eighth, 82s; final, 80yds, 61 2-ss; total, 11m 21 3-ss. 50YDS INVITATION SCRATCH RACE J. P. Farrell (University) 1 O. Griffiths (New South AVales .. 2 A. AV. Imper (Ponsonby) .4 3 Time, 265. A good start saw the three placed men and R. Porteous, the Mount Eden entrant, get away together. Farrell and Raper barely headed Griffiths at the turn, which favoured them, and in the run back, Farrell was placed ahead of Griffiths, who made a valiant sprint. From one side of the bath. Raper appeared to be actually in first place, with Farrell second and Griffiths third; certainly, there was little to judge between the three. Raper swam perhaps the finest race of the evening, because he had previously gained first and second places ipr two lOOyds events. Ryan and Griffiths gave a demonstration and announcements from Bridson and Ryan were broadcast by wireless from the baths.
