Parnell’s Chance Bright
WILL A.C.A. LEADERS FALL?
Close Finish Expected
A CLOSE finish is expected when the two top teams on the Auckland Cricket Association’s senior A grade competition ladder, University and Parnell, complete their match at Eden Park tomorrow afternoon, for, although the maroon men were dismissed for 181) runs in their first innings last week, the students opened disastrously and had three wickets down for 12 runs at stumps.
When the same was commenced last Saturday, Varsity swung into action in a most promising manner and Matheson and Smeeton, in rare bowling form, smashed their ways through the earlier partnerships. But Anthony and Duncan came to the rescue for Parnell, and managed to make the total a respectable one with the assistance of Singleton, who carried his bat for -15. Varsity has lost a valuable batsman In Schnauer, who was clean-bowled by Wensley for a “duck” last week, and another of the *‘out’’rnen, Ron Bush, can usually bo expected to make a few- runs. However, a capable scoring man in Metge is not out. and A.C.A. selector Smeeton has yet to « ome. Nevertheless, the University men are likely to have a hard fight to get the required number of runs, especially if the wicket in any way favours the bowlers. And A. F. Wensley, the new coach, showed last Saturday that he can be a most dangerous man with the ball. PONSONBY SHOULD WIN Ponsonby is generally favoured as the winner of the match on the second wicket at Eden Park, for in reply to the Ponies’ first innings total of 158, United Suburbs has already lost four wickets for but 33 runs. There are, however, several fighting batsmen yet to come, and they may be able to better the Ponsonby attack. Last week, Grafton topped the second century against Y.M.C.A. on No. 3 wicket at Eden Park, and as •he Young Men have not yet commenced their innings, is in a strong position for a three-point win at least. But with all the afternoon before them. batsmen of the calibre of Cooper, Elliott and Lyon may be able to bring 200 up. At North Shore. Eden with 259 on for the loss of nine wickets should have little trouble in getting a threepoint win, and may even chase a four-pointer. The Shore batsmen will again be on trial, and if they do not do any better than they have done in previous matches this season. Eden should go very near to clinching its first complete victory of the season. Wins may be predicted for Parnell, Ponsonby. Grafton and Eden. Following are the teams for tomorrow’s junior grade matches: Second Grade Mount Albert.—A. Hirst. G. Ott. Rankin (2). AN'. Floyd. C\ Jamieson. AT. Beluga r. S. Booth, K. Slaney, A. Wilkinson, W. Miles. All Saints.—Averill, Bedding, De Blois, dray, Marshall. Thom, Thompson, Williams. Mclntosh, Francis, D’Audney. Northcote.—A. Borrows, K. Havill, P.
