FREE TRAM PASSES

CITY COUNCIL PRIVILEGE

NEW LEGISLATION NECESSARY Special legislation is required before any city or borough councillor may be granted free passes on trams or buses. The information was given to the City Council last evening by the Minister of Internal Affairs in reply to an inquiry. The Minister added that it had been decided by the Government to make provision whereby any council which did not conduct its own locomotion services might obtain passes for councillors' use. There was no authority to make such provision by regulation, and special legislation would be necessary.

He would take action when an amendment to the Municipal Corporations Act was brought down. If, however, an amendment to the Auckland Transport Act was brought down in the meantime the Minister suggested that provision be inserted in that amendment. The communication was received and the Minister thanked.
