CUTS MORAL LIFE
SUPERVISION OF PARKS AND BEACHES URGED
GRAVE SITUATION ALLEGED The urgent need for the appointment of women police and the need for more careful supervision of cabarets, places of amusement and the beaches, were urged at a meeting of the Auckland Social Workers’ Association, held yesterday afternoon. IITOST of the discussion centred round the grave situation, which is alleged to have risen regarding the moral life of the City. Mrs. C. P. Newton, of the Akarana Maori Association, spoke of the dangers which assailed young Maori girls in Auckland. All those present at the meeting were impressed by the urgency for the supervision and patrol of the public parks, and the following resolution was forwarded to the City Council: That this meeting of the Auckland Social Workers’ Association urges upon the Auckland City Council the necessity for the patrolling of the parks and beaches for the protection of our young pepole. The Rev. Jasper Calder took the chair in place of Sister Hannah, who was unable to attend. Those present were Sister Bessie and the Rev. C. G. Serimgeour (representing the Methodist Central Mission), the Rev. Jasper Calder (Auckland City Mission), Mrs. C. P. Newton (Akarana Maori Association), Mr. Alfred Thompson (Businessmen’s Relief Service), Nurse Stubington and Nurse Williams (St. John Ambulance Association), the Rev. Charles Chandler (Discharged Prisoners’ Association), and Sister Esther, secretary. In the discussion on unemployment Mr. Calder was warmly supported when he complimented the Government on the efficient way in which the unemployment question had been handled. The association asked the Government to consider the possibility of granting free railway passes to married men engaged on relief work who were travelling home for the Christmas vacation of 10 days.
