P. AND T. SALARIES
GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATION
DEPUTATION WAITS ON MINISTER Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Post and Telegraph Employees’ Association officials waited on the Hon. J. B. Donald, Postmaster-General, yesterday, to discuss the investigation the Government proposes to make into the question of the minimum salary of P. and T. employees. Near the end of last session, the following motion, proposed by Mr. J. A. Young, Reform member for Hamilton, as as amendment to the motion of no-confidence moved from the Labour benches, was carried:* —“That this House recommends the Government to expedite the statutory reclassification- of the salaries of employees of the State in the several departments as each reclassification is due, and further recommends that the Government make specific inquiries into the question of the minimum adult wages paid to its employees, with a view to placing the lower-paid wage-earners on a fair and equitable basis, and restoring as far as is practicable the loss made by those receiving a salary not exceeding £295 per annum.’ The Postmaster-General informed the deputation that the matter had not yet been discussed by the Cabinet, but it would be in the near future. He assured the deputation that the employees would be given facilities to enable them to be represented when the investigation was being made.
