MAYOR’S CASTING VOTE
USED TWICE ON SAME SUBJECT
BIRKENHEAD BU C STOPS
A unique position arose at the Birkenhead Borough Council meeting last evening when the ‘ Mayor, Mr. J. I*. MePhail, had to exercise his casting vote twice on the same subject. The council had recently provided bus stops at various streets. One stop was Seddon 3toad. Residents at Wairoa Avenue, about. 70yds from the stop, petitioned the council for the stop to be at their street. Their request was granted. Then the people who wanted the Seddon Road stop sent in a ; counter-petition signed by more people than the first, to have the stop retained at Seddon Road. Cr. Hewson moved that the council’s resolution fixing Wairoa Avenue as the stopping place be rescinded, and the motion was carried. The same councillor then moved that the bus stop be between the t\\£ streets. Cr. Jasper moved an amendment that a bus stop be made at each street, the bus drivers to be allowed to stop at either at their own discretion. On thc_ amendment being put Crs. Jasper, Kerruish, Hayman and Alexander voted for it, while the Mayor, Crs. Barlow, Hewson and Campbell voted against. On the Mayor’s casing vote the amendment was lost. The proposal was then put to the vote tor the stop between the two streets. Crs. Jasper. Kerruish. Hayman and Alexander still voted against it. with the result that the Mayor had to use his casting vote for the second time on the same subject, and the motion was carried.
