DEVONPORT BOROUGH

BRIDGE FINANCING SCHEME

NOT SUPPORTED BY COUNCIL The Devonport Borough Council last evening resolved to adopt the recommendation from the council in committee that it could not support the suggestion of the Harbour Bridge Association regarding the scheme for financing the proposed harbour bridge. There was not sufficient details before it to permit it to come to any decision to adopt the resolutions, which were for (1) to support a toll bridge; (:!> a State guaranteed bond issue; and (3) an art union. Requests for information about the number of houses and possible sections asked for by the association were supplied. Permission to soil or hire umbrellas on Cheltenham Beach was granted. The kiosk on the beach will be painted. The engineer is to submit plans for better accommodation for bathers, ' the capital charges to be paid out of the earnings of the kiosk. The Health Department advised that fishermen selling fish at the .\vhorf head must use sanitary methods and requested the borough health officer to aet. It was considered that the council did not have jurisdiction—that the matter was one for the department itself to handle. The Health Department’s clifinition of the areas to be served by the North Shore rubbish destructor was referred to the two Devonport representatives on the joint committee controlling the destructor, with power to act. An application by the proprietors of the Victoria Theatre. Devonport, to show pictures on the evening of Christmas Day was granted. Theatre owners are to be asked to consider making a donation to the cost of building a dental clinic at the public school at Devonport. Devonport United Band was granted permission to hold a carnival on Windsor Reserve during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Tenders for council-owned leasehold lands at Narrow Neck were received at slightly above the upset rentals. The clerk has power to negotiate leases of other sections.

Commendation of the work of tarring and sanding the footpaths by the borough staff was made by Cr. OasselsBrown. The Mayor remarked that it was a relief to the council to hear something other than talk of borough “stroke.” * p

Several complaints from the Melrose and Calliope Ratepayers’ Association regarding storm water damage in streets, cutting grass in streets, and dirty water in the water mains were referred for immediate attention. Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor, reported that with Messrs. T. Walsh and YV. CassclsBrown he had attended a meeting concerning borough amalgamation. There had been a helpful discussion and further details were to be supplied to another meeting of the delegates. He had also to suggest that a small wall be built at the south end of Narrow Neck Beach, to save a part of the cliff that is being spoiled by storm water drainage. The town clerk reported that out of 'the £1,990 loan raised for the beach wall the present contract would, with-extras authorised, absorb all the money. The council will ask the sea wall contractors doing work on the beach to furnish a price for the work of saving the cliff.
