Noel Ryan Beaten

BRIDSON’S DETERMINED SWIM

Griffiths Takes Sprint Event

HEADED from the start, Xoel Ryan, Australian distance champion swimmer, was defeated with surprising ease by the Aucklander, Gordon Bridson, over a quarter-mile in Die Tepid Baths last evening. The other main event, the sprint, was won simply by Ryan’s companion on the New Zealand tour, Owen Griffiths.

Bridson, by his recently-established New Zealand record of 5m 16 3-5 s for 440yds, was known to have an excellent chance of defeating Ryan, whose best time was 5m 17s. From the plunge, Bridson was ahead, and he did not have trouble in increasing his lead to loyds at the tape, to cover the distance in 5m 21 l-ss. The time was not impressive, but it did not provide for easy swimming. The Aucklander maintained a steady pace throughout, and Ryan, handicapped undoubtedly by few opportunities to train since his arrival in New Zealand, dropped behind gradually. At only one stage during a race which surprised the attendance of more than 1.000 people did Ryan give an indication of overhauling the Dominion’s middle-distance champion. At the 220vds mark. the Australian sprinted/ but he could not sustain the effort. It was a test of youth. Bridson is only a young swimmer, who now has*his chances of dominating the distance national swimming added to considerably; Ryan will be 18 years old on December 10. Bridson was the fitter swimmer. For the ease of the win the race disappointed. It was to have been a triangular contest, Bridson versus Ryan and Griffiths, who is New South Wales 220yds champion. Griffiths, after his sprint and because it was not expected that he would approach the distance stars, remained out of the main event. After the first lap of the sprint. Griffiths held the race. He lead J. P. Farrell, Auckland sprint champion, and A. W. Raper home in 58 3-ss. No very fast time was recorded in any event, but this was due to first-of-season staleness. Details of the principal events are: 440 YDS INVITATION SCRATCH RACE G. Bridson (Grammar) 1 N. Ryan (Manly Swimming Club) 2 Time, 5m 21 l-ss. Won by 15yds. Bridson got away first and lead by a yard after the first 100yds. The second 100 was cut out in 725, and Ryan, who was employing a quicker stroke than Bridson’s deliberate action, tried unsuccessfully to overhaul his opponent at this stage. The third 100 was covered in 74 3-ss, and Bridson increased his lead to nearly half a length in the next 50yds. The pace was eased hv Bridson and Ryan, swimming pluckily, reduced the Aucklander’s lead by several yards near the end. 100YDS INVITATION SCRATCH RACE (World’s record, 51s, J. Weismuller: New Zealand record, 55 4-os, I. W. Cameron; Australian record, 54 2-ss, R. Grier) O. Griffiths (N.S.W.) 1 J. P. Farrell (Universitly) .. .. 2 A. W. Raper (Ponsonby) 3 Time, 58 3-ss. * Won by five feet, with Raper four feet back. Raper and Farrell lead Griffiths at 33 l-3yds, with D. P. Lindsay (Waitemata) and R. Porteous (Mount Eden) following. Griffiths won the turn and drew away steadily in the remainder of the race. Ryan and Griffiths were welcomed to Auckland by Mr. J. B. Patterson, chairman of the Parks Committee of the City Council. After their events, the Australians gave a demonstration of swimming strokes. Bridson’s swimming was convincing, and the Aucklander must have surprised Ryan. The unassuming Manly boy lost because he could not hope to strike top form in his first race on tour, and because he was matched with the best swimmer New Zealand has produced over a quarter-mile. This evening, at the Auckland Swimming Centre's second carnival, both the Australians are entered to face Bridson over another of his championship distances. the half-mile. Ryan will benefit from last evening’s swim. Auckland’s sprinters will give Griffiths a harder tussle over the 50yds sprint race. Other results were (Code: Par..
