NO WAGES, NO FIGHT
NANKING “IRONSIDES” MUTINY SOME CIVILIANS KILLED Reed. 9 a.m. SHANGHAI, Tuesday. Non-payment of wages, coupled with dislike of an order to proceed with the Canton flight against revolting “Ironside” troops, precipitated a mutiny in a regiment of the Twenty-fourth Division of the Nationalist Army, commanded by General Shi Yu San, at Pukow, opposite Nanking today, the soldiers looting the shops in the principal streets and fleeing to the surrounding districts. Other troops were called in to quell the mutiny, resulting in considerable shooting on the outskirts of Pukow. A number of civilians were killed and several houses were burned. The Pukow Nanking ferry service was suspended. Another report states that last evening the initial fighting for the possession of Canton has commenced in earnest.
Wounded men are arriving at Canton. Reinforcement are being rushed by the Cantonese Government, which sent an order to strengthen the resistance.
The Kwangsi forces have steadily advanced on Canton in the last few days, in conjunction with the Nanking “Ironsides.”
