FIREMEN’S PRIVILEGES
DISCUSSION AT MT. EDEN The question of Sunday billiards at the fire station was the cause of a lively discussion at a meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening. According to Mr. W. H. Nagle, it would be a good idea to allow* the men to play billiards at the fire station on Sundays, as this would offer some encouragement to the younger men to remain on the premises in case of emergencies. Mr. R. J. Mills supported these remarks, for it was his opinion that soon there would be no young men at the station at all. In opposing the playing of billiards on Sunday, Mr. S. E. Campbell said that since its discontinuance it had been quite a pleasure not to hear the clicking of the balls on Sundays. Mr. F. L. Rend ell held that the men should be allowed to play for a certain time on Sundays. He did not wish the men to be prevented from having some amusement during the day if it could be arranged not to conflict with the feelings of neighbours. On Mr. Hendell’s motion it was decided that the men should be allowed to play on Sundays between the hours of noon and 3 p.m., subject to the pleasure of the council.
