FORTUNE SMILED LATE

A T ERY mixed luck was experi- * enced at the Takapuna meeting by horses trained at Takanini by J. T. Jamieson. It must have been exasperating for this trainer and his patrons to see the good things getting beaten time after time, such as Vali and Taurua on Saturday. Yesterday more second placings came their way with Polyxena, Sight Draft and Vali, and it was not until the last race that the Goddess of Fortune smiled. In that event the suburban stable produced both Refresher and Mithra, the former being an oddson proposition, and it came as a sort of super-climax when they ran first and second. In all trainer Jamieson started seventeen horses on the two days, two horses from his stable figuring in each of five races, and the results were:—One win, six seconds and one third. He turned out five favourites (three of them were at odds on), four second favourites, and three third favourites. Stakes won were £615, of which £340 was place money only. These seventeen horses on the two days carried £12,629 on the totalisator, and they returned £8 7s 6d by way of dividends. The investments on this stable’s horses represented over 16 per cent, of the full totalisator turnover for the two days. The Takanini stable in itself contributed largely to the revenue of the Takapuna Jockey Club, and it also oroduced horses at a time when fields were very much depleted.
