AN ENGAGEMENT

The engagement is announced of Elizabeth Geraldine, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burns, of “Donne,” Remuera, to Frederick Christopher Allen, Laverton Downs, Western Australia. MODERN KITCHENS The good kitchen is of logical plan. There is no need for inefficient or wasteful planning of space in the service end of any dwelling-house any more than in any manufacturing plant if an analysis of activities and a careful layout are considered to suit individual needs. The woman who must cross her kitchen a score or so of times in prepaing any simple meal has not done this, or else the limitations of the existing plan of her house are very severe.

With the kitchen 1 have in mind the first important factor to note is the matter of lighting. Two windows above the sink and another in the left-hand wall take care of this problem splendidly during the day. A-t night the large central fixture gives adequate illumination, and it is aided by' the sink light. Drain-boards are at either side of the sink and beyond these is convenient working space. Built-in cupboards all about the room allow for every article of equipment having a special uncrowded space, so that there will he no nesting of various things within one another, as too often happens when storage space is at a premium.
