MILLIONAIRE SPORTSMAN

FAMOUS AMERICAN FIGURE ON MALOLO

MR. J. W. COFFROTH The millionaire sportsman, Mr. James W. yoffroth, a fight promoter and president ot the Tia Juana Jockey Club, California, is a passenger on the Malolo. From 1901 to 1914 he was one of the most prominent fight promoters in America and some of the contests ho sponsored included the FitzsimmonsJeffries bout and two other Fitzsimmons fights. Mr. Coffroth retired from fight promoting about 12 years ago and founded the Coffroth Handicap, now tho richest racing purse in the world. Tho handicap carries a stake of £20.000. He stated yesterday that legislation in the United States has interfered with racing. Betting was prohibited on the courses in California and compelled the Tia Juana Jockey Club, of which Mr. Coffroth is president, to cross the border into Mexico. An entirely new course has been built fit Agua Caliente, California, and will be opened officially on December 28. Mr Coffroth considers that the Australian racecourses are much better than those of America. He also regards Australian and New Zealand horses as the best in the world. “It is a most difficult thing to gel an English stallion of any importance into America.” said Mr. Coffroth. “It is regarded as lese majesto to allow a good thoroughbred out of England.”
