DIET AND HEALTH
LECTURE BY MR. R. J. TERRY
Under the auspices of the New Zealand Rationalists’ Association a very interesting address on “Rational Diet, in Relation. to Mental and Physical Health” was given by Mr. R. J. Terry at the Majestic Theatre last evening. There was a large. attendance. The lecturer pointed out that the human body, like a human-made machine, was constantly breaking down, but unlike the machine, the body was constantly being renewed. Remarkable instances of diet repairing the human body were given by the lecturer. who said he would not tell them of cures effected in out-of-the-way places of the world, but of cures in their own town.
The most startling, he said, was the case of a child dying through socallecf bloodlessness, and who had only four or five weeks to live. Bloodlessness, said the lecturer, was really the lack of certain things in the blood. A suitable diet quickly brought about the desired change, said Mr. Terry. The lecturer also told of the case of a lad of 17 years who had had 22 operations and who had been in and out of hospital for three years. A diet of green stuffs with certain shellfish added effected a complete cure, he said. Referring to the use of shellfish in diets, the lecturer remarked upon the thickness of the shell of a cockle in proportion to the size of the little animal inside which grew' the shell. It stood to reason, he said, that its body must be heavily saturated with bone-forming material.
The address wras followed with close attention and a hearty round of applause was accorded Mr. Terry at the conclusion.
