FINAL DAY AT FORBURY PARK
Trotting on Heavy Track
JOHN JINKS SHOWS GOOD FORM
Special to TIIE SUN DUNEDIN, Saturday. NOTWITHSTANDING the dull, showery weather experienced today for the conclusion of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s spring meeting, there was a large attendance. The track was heavy and the footing got worse as the day advanced.
There was again a good increase in the betting compared with last year. The machine handled £3G,208. against £28,453 on the concluding day in 1928. The total for the fixture reached £60.529, an increase of £12,692 over last November’s carnival, when the figures were £47,537. With the exception of Lydia and Dilnon, favourites had an “off-day,” and backers were astray in their selections. Trampfast, a first day \vinner, was selected as a good favourite for the principal event, but he suifered a narrow defeat by Author Jinks, who put up a fine performance from the back mark. The tliree-year-old John Jinks, half-brother to Author Jinks, also gave Owner O’Keefe another victory, while the third string of his bow. Lady Cello, half-sister to the other pair, made a bold hid to make it a “trio,” being beaten by a short neck in the final event. In this race Wrackler was a warm fancy, but the going hampered the consistent Wrack gelding. Poor Contest Nelson Prince was the only one in the field that began well in the Suil?urban Handicap and he established such a good lead that it soon became a one horse race. The principal interest in the race was supplied by the fact that' Combine dropped his pilot in the first furlong and was then allowed to career round the track until stopped by exhaustion. In such cases the clerk of the course might have eliminated the chance of an accident bv endeavouring to stop the runaway. Combine went out for the race with a hood and blinkers, which debarred the horse from seeing the way rotind the track, and such artificial ideas of getting a horse to race should certainly occupy the attention of the stewards. Derby Candidate Lydia started favourite for the Advance Handicap, and after being patiently handled until the last quarter’she was sent to the front and won nicely, but with a great deal to spurt. Captain Wrack and Kate Logan were disputing the leadership until two furlongs from home and Lady Zephyr and Grand Canyon also looked to have a. chance in the last half-mile, but at the business end Lydia held too much class for the opposition. Lydia looks one likely to make a better mark. Dilnon Again Bismurato made the early running in the Empire Handicap till Dilnon smothered him for speed over the last quarter and won going away at the finish. The race admits of no description as there was only on? horse in it when it came to the finish. Good Finish. • They went for Sir Guy in the Brighton Handicap and Danny Boy. AVrackeen was hopelessly left. Otaia Bose began best and made the eariy running, but half a mile from home Danny Boy raced up to the front and turned into the straight looking a winner. In the last 100 yards he. however, began to tire, but lasted long enough to beat Erin Chimes by a short neck. Sir Guy finished well a head oft in third place, and Otaio Kose was next. Spectacular Contest Murnel De Oro, Maiwhariti, Lindj berglt and Travis Axworthv were i taken out of the Forbury Handicap. Front a spectacular point it was one ! of the best races ever seen on the i course. The field ran in close forI mation throughout the piece, with I Steel All showing the way and Daltnenv close up, and it was any horse's race over the last six furlongs. Dal--1 rneny went to the front about 2$ furlongs from home, but failed to sustain j his effort, and died out. A good deal i of use seemed to be made with Author I Jinks in the early part, through wipi i n g off his handicap too soon, but | be proved himself a good horse, and stalling off Trampfast beat him a long ! neck. Trampfast had to cover a lot 1 of ground throughout the race, and had i to come wide over the final quarter of a mile. Jean McElwyn finished a good third, and Logan Chief stayed on better
than what is usually the case over a two-mile journey. One for Commander Bingen Commander Bingen came with a strong finish in the Victoria Handicap, and beat Nelson Ata after the latter looked a winner at the home turn, after Lazarus cracked up, when with the leaders at .this stage. Lazarus would have probably won bar the mistake. Good THree-yeamold John Jinks proved too sturdy for the opposition in the Tainui Handicap. He put up a good performance for a three-year-old, by staying on well. He beat the favourite, Nelson McElwyn, comfortably at the finish, with Roddy well back. Favourites Fail The Recovery Handicap was really a duel between Neerson and Lady Cello, and the others could not get near them in the sloppy going. Neerson stuck on well to beat Lady Cello, and although Wrackler and Talent were closing up at the finish, they could not give away the handicap ground in such bad going. Results are as follow:
