TE PUKE NOTES

I lie cinnabar moths liberated in the To Puke district last season have made their reappearance, and although no appreciable results are. in evidence, at this early stage of the moths’ activities, it is expected that by the end of tho season the ragwort pest will have received a decided check. Good progress is being made with the erection of the Pcmgakawa Bridge on the Old Coach Road, and it is anticipated that it will be opened for traffic at the week-end. It is a substantial structure with a 35ft span carried qn steel girders, and is capable ot carrying a 10-ton load. The bridge has been built to the Public Works standards, the contractor being Mr. J, Clare, a builder of many years’ experience. Mr. F. A. Stevens, county engineer, supervised the work. Mr. J. 11. Evans, of Papamoa, has notified the secretary of the local A. and P. Association that he is donating two special prizes for competition ar the forthcoming autumn show—one of Sgns for the best heavy draught mare m foal to the sire Sir Marniont, and one of 3gns for the best medium draught mare in foal to the same sire. Immediate steps to enforce the eradication of noxious weeds in the town board area were decided on at the meeting of the Town Board . Mr. C. Perring reported that up to November 19, a total amount of £441 had been spent on the improvements at the waterworks. The board discussed the question as to whether a still further enlargement of the dam was advisable, and decided not to continue further but to complete the present scheme, which would suffice for some years. A request from the secretary of the Mount Maunganui Life-Saving Club for a donation to its funds was received. The board decided to donate the sum of two guineas. Members drew attention to the necessity of people having a knowledge of life-saving, and Mr. Cuff undertook to request Mr. Wilkie to give an address and demonstration at an early date.
