WAIHI WAR MEMORIAL

PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD From Our Own Correspondent Waihi’s lack of a municipal war memorial was a subject which caused some discussion at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council last evening. The question was raised by Cr. (Dr.) T. G. Short, who drew attention to the appeal that was being made for funds for a provincial roll of honour in the Auckland War Memorial Museum. The speaker said he was in sympathy with the fund, which was one to which all in a position to do so should subscribe, but he felt that Waihi should have a memorial of its own. The Mayor, Mr. W. M. Wallnutt, stated that the intention in connection with the beautifying of the slopes of Martha Hill was to dedicate it next Anzac Day and to call it Anzac Park. Suggestions were made that some sort of a memorial should be provided in the park, and the Mayor undertook to call a public meeting early in the New Year to discuss the matter.
