Australia W ants to See Chide
PAQUITO’S CONSOLATION It is always interesting to see ourselves as others see us. So it is with our horses, and in this connection “Pilot’s” view of Chide’s prowess makes interesting reading, for he is the most prominent of Australia’s sporting writers: New Zealand has sent some highclass horses to Australia, and another sure to visit this country is Chide, whose deeds at the New Zealand Cup meeting proved him quite out of the ordinary. He seems like rivalling Nightmarch. From the time Chide won a mile and a-quarter handicap with 9st in Dunedin in October, there was never much doubt as to what would be favourite for the New Zealand Cup. He carried 7.4 in the Cup, and won by six lengths in the record time of 3.23 3-5, the previous best being the 3.25 put up by Bridge, Royal Star, and The Banker. Chide’s Subsequent victories in two weight-for-age races—Canterbury Cup, 2\ miles, and G. G. Stead Memorial Cup, 1J mile—emphasised how much he had in hand in the New Zealand Cup with 7.4. Financial Consolation It was fortunate for Mr. H. A. Knight that he sent Paquito from Sydto Melbourne for the two Cups, instead of sending him home for the New Zealand Cup, He did not win either, but the £2,000 for second in the Melbourne Cup, and some sweep money—£l,2oo it was rumoured — made a nice consolation Paquito had 8.9 in the New Zealand Cup, and would have fared badly in an attempt to give Chide 191 b. At the finish of the Canterbury Cup Chide was pulling up a couple of lengths ahead of Concentrate, but an even better weight-for-age performance was his defeat of Honour in the Stead Memorial Cup. Honour Won the New Zealand Derby, but though that did not remove the doubt whether he was really first-class at a mile and a-half, he is undeniably good at a mile and a-quarter. It says a lot for Chide that he was able to down him at that distance in 2.3 4-5. Plenty of Time Easter is late this year, the first day of the A.J.C. Autumn Meeting not taking place until April 19. Consequently, if Chide’s owner wishes to run him in the two miles w.f.a. race, the Trentham Gold Cup, at Wellington, on March 17, he will still be able to get him to Sydney about three weeks before the commencement of racing at Randwick. As a two-year-old Chide’s best efforts were a second and a third in five starts, and at his first start at three years he was unplaced in a Trial plate at Ashburton. Since then he has been unbeaten, winning nine races. Bred by G. Murray-Aynsley, who also trains him, he is by the Polymelus horse Paladin from Reproachful (her second foal), by Bonny Glen from Lady Disdain, by The Officer from Oriflamme, by Dreadnought. Paladin’s dam, Cestus, is a halfsister by St. Amant, to Emblematic, who has sired winners in New South Wales. RACING FIXTURES NOVEMBER 30, Dec. 2.—Takapuna J.C. 30, Dec. 2. —Feilding J.C.
