LINTON MINE DISASTER
ROYAL COMMISSION WILL INVESTIGATE PERSONNEL ANNOUNCED Press Association WELLINGTON. Today. A Royal Commission has been appointed by the Government to investigate the Mount Linton colliery disaster The members of the commission are: Messrs. W. H. Woodward, S.M., Invercargill; W. Carson, mine manager, Kaitangata; and John Smeaton, president of the Brunnerton Miners’ Union. . A wide order of reference has been prepared by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. W. A. Veitch, who said yesterday that he was anxious not only to ascertain the cause of the accident, which resulted in the loss of three lives and the injury of several other employees, but also hoptd to secure recommendations which would make a recurrence of such an accident lmposS 1 The scope of the inquiry is similar to that adopted in connection with the Hobson mine disaster about two years ago The order of reference includes a specific direction to investigate the efficiency of the inspection of the mine by ail or any persons who are responsible for such inspections. The commission is also directed to inquire whether or not loss of life would have been averted or reduced if the services of a rescue brigade had been available immediately after the explosion occurred. -
