SHIP BEATS THE BAN

THALATTA LEAVES SYDNEY WITH SHEEP HOUR'S START SECURED SYDNEY, Thursday. The Norwegian motor-ship Thalatta. with 5,000 Australian sheep for Russia on board, sailed today a bare hour before the Government’s proclamation prohibiting the export of stud sheep became operative. The vessel was beyond the threemile limit, and outside the jurisdiction of Australia when the embargo took effect. No attempt was made to detain the vessel. Before her departure an official from the Navigation Department, who was on the wharf, declared that everything was in order, and gave the master a clearance. It was ascertained that all but 150 of the sheep on board were flock ewes. The Thalatta had a consignment of 5,000 rams and ewes for Russia. The purchase was made on behalf of the Soviet Government. However, the Federal Ministry caused a sensation by issuing a proclamation prohibiting the exportation of these particular sheep. Nearly all of them had been taken on board the Thalatta. It is understood that Russia had placed orders for an additional 20,000 sheep. AFRICAN BREEDERS NOT PERTURBED BY BAN IN AUSTRALIA Reed. 10 a.m. CAPETOWN, Thurs. A questionnaire answered by the principal breeders indicates that no centre is perturbed at the Australian embargo on the exportation ot stud sheep.
