HARBOUR BRIDGE PROJECT
ATTITUDE RECOMMENDATIONS TO COMMISSION
The Takapuna Borough Council, at a special meeting last evening, di,. cussed the attitude to he adopted hv the borough before the Harbour Bridge Commission.
The suggestion that there should b e a round-table conference to decide what evidence the council should submit to the commission was advanced by the Mayor. Mr. J. YV. Williamson. Ho thought that he and the borough engineer. Mr. A. Slinger, should b e the official representatives of the council before the commission, and should submit statistical information as to the growth of the borough, and its present position.
After discussing possible sites tor the bridge, it was agreed that the council should ask for a bridge crossing from the vicinity of Beaumont Street to as near as engineering possibilities will allow to the middle or Shoal Bay. and not further west than Northcote Point.
It was decided to recommend to the Bridge Association the advisability of holding a conference with representatives of Ihe Harbour Board prior to the resumption of the commission’s sittings, with a view to arriving at points of common concern to the two interests.
To meet, the commission's request for evidence proving the necessity for the bridge, it was agreed that the Mayor should submit statistics prrpared by the town clerk as to the population and growth of the borough, and the extent of the traffic through it, as established by tally.
Another witness will be the engineer. and any councillor will be free to offer his personal view. The fact that the bridge would form a link in the main northern highway made the council decide that ihe official evidence should claim that the Government should bear at least half the cost of construction.
