Trotting at Dunedin FORBURY PARK OPENS

Good Sport Witnessed Special to TOE SOX Tu--, DUNEDIN, Thursday. HE committee of the Forburv Park Trotting Club appeared • i bhow a good deal of courage in deciding to cro on with the opening card of the spring fixture today. Heavy < rizx mg rain which set in prior to the meeting came on again ilnring the morning, but toward noon the weather made a good improvement.

" nat "as a sloppy track at the outset became converted into quite good going, and there was even a suggestion of dust when the final event came up for decision. The going was quite satisfactory when the principal event fell due, and only a few damp patches remained near the roils The best going up to this stage was on the middle of the track, but afterward the best way to the post was near the rails. The attendance when the function opened was on the meagre side but improved appreciably as the day wore on. Speculation was very brisk, and the machine showed a substantial increase of .£4,938 over the corresponding day last year. The figures todav 19"8 hed against £ 19.353 in The racing was full of interest and while a few favourites kept backers onside, some good prices were returned in the majority of the events. A review of the sport, together with the results, follows: A Close Finish Nancy McKinney was the only one struck out of the F.oslyn Handicap, for which Ambition finished a slightly better favourite than Kitty Patch. Almost without exception the field went at a broken gait in the sloppy going. Standby. Kitty Patch. Ambition anil Great Way were handling the track better than the rest of the field, and when a lap from home. Standby and Ambition had the result between them. Ambition went to the front over two furlongs from home, and looked a sure winner half-way up the straight, but Standby came again and won by a good head. The rest of the field did not threaten danger over the final half-mile, and the third horse finished over 20 lengths away, with Great Way, Bonette and Wah following. The result of the race did not supply much of a line as to what would happen on a dry track. Derby Colt’s Success The pen went through the names of Loretta, Napoleon, Lightwood and Erin's Chance for the Progressive Handicap. Sea Mist started favourite, and after being in the picture until two furlongs from home, faded out. Grand Canyon began well, and after disputing the issue with Kate Logan, outstayed her at the finish to win by a short length from Patronius. who drew up at the finish and beat Kate Logan by the narrowest of margins on the post. Captain Wrack broke up when with the leaders in the early part of the race. Sunranes broke up in the early part of the race and interfered

with Ardpour, Ruth Logan and Rey Child. Crown Jewel dwelt on the nmrk and no did Lady Zephyr, who afterwards went such a good race, that she must havp been dangerous if beginning correctly. Favourite Well Beaten Morning Sun started favourite for the St. Hilda Handicap, in which Dilnon and Roddy began well, and led from Morning Sun and Marinca when passing the stand. Dilnon and Roddy fought a battle over the final half, and at the finish the former came away and won by a good half dozen lengths. Morning Sun was a moderate third, and the winner was the only* one staying on well at the finishing post. Logan Brae, Baron Bingen. Ardgour, Sandy l’oiliter and Haydock were withdrawn from the Spring Handicap. Sir Guy became a good favourite. lie did not begin too well, but soon reached a handy position with Erin’s Chimes and Brentlight. Sir Guy and Danny Boy were in charge half a mile from home, when Dice put in a claim at the far turn. Sir Guy shook off Dice in the run home, and won by nearly two lengths, Danny Boy a good third, and Otaio Rose close up fourth. Rustle, Wrackeen and Mac Locanda followed the placed lot. Confidence Justified Audobell was the only 'withdrawal from the Dominion Handicap. Dolores was made a good favourite, and justified the confidence bj' wearing down Commander Bingen, who cracked up under pressure after leading till about 24 furlongs from home. Dolores had then to resist a final challenge from Lenwood, who finished at a break. Hew Metford did not act kindly in the early part of the race, but afterward put in some good work, without however retrieving the ground lost in the first stages. Peter Lin also made a bad beginning, and dropped rigjht out of it. All Peters pulled out a good dash of speed when racing down the back stretch in the last half-mile, and Repute, who seems troubled in the wind, faded out after following Commander Bingen for about a mile and a-half. Favourites Routed The Caversham Handicap proved to be a good betting race, with fairly even support coming for Baron Bingen, Cushla D’Or, Nelson De Oro and Nelson McElwyn. Ethiopin failed to begin, and Eugene De Oro and John Jinks also lost ground. Glenrow'en was smartest away, but Cushla D’Or opened up a good lead five furlongs from home, but failed to hold the ad-

vantage, and Lily Harold, after losing ground in the first part of the race, ran into second place two furlongs from home. Hanging on. she won well at the finish from Haydock, who also outstayed Cushla D’Or in the run home. Both Baron Bingen and Nelson De Oro failed badly in the last halfmile. Judging by the ground Lily Harold made up, she would have been very unlucky to lose. Orphan at Last Orphan started a farily solid favourite for the Dash Handicap, and smothered the field for speed at the finish Return Voyage and Hector’s Own were disputing leadership, and the latter turned for home first, with Return Voyage beaten. Once in the straight Orphan came with a brilliant run and won racing away at the finish from Hector’s Own. with Return Voyage, who was a good second choice on the machine, in fourth place.
