BIG LOAN SANCTIONED
WAITEMATA POWER BOARD PLANS
OVERWHELMING MAJORITY
By an overwhelming majority, ratepayers sanctioned the Waitemata Electric Power Board's loam of £IOO,OOO at a poll yesterday, a total of 1,579 votes was cast in favour of the loan, and only 216 against it.
Only 1,809 ratepayers exercised their votes, compared with 14,061 entitled to express their opinion on the proposal.
Power board officials regard the result as highly satisfactory, and accept the voting as an expression of confidence in the board's policy. The service is evidently appreciated in the boroughs and town boards already reticulated, as the majority in favour of the proposal in these areas was ten to one. The county area, which is only partly served, supported the loan on a five to one basis.
The results were completed threequarters of an hour after the pollingbooths closed, only returns from Titirangi, Upper Waiwera, and Whanga paroa failing to come to hand; but, even so, the majority of these are expected to favour the loan. The secretary of the board, Mr. A. Main, explained today that the board had sufficient loan funds to carrj' on present work until April next, and none of the loan just authorised would be raised until then. Of the loan, only £30,000 would be required for work in the near future, and it would be used for carrying out reticulation in outlying districts.
