HER 90TH BIRTHDAY
WHANGAREI RESIDENT Special to THE SUX IVIUXGAREI, Wednesday. In good health, except for failing J eyesight, Mrs. Andrew Hoey celebrated j her 90th birthday on Monday. She j received a number of congratulatory i cables and telegrams, and *n the evenj ing a social was held at which a ; number of guests were present. ! Mrs. lloey was born in the Isle of | Man and left there in for New i Zealand. Shortly after her arrival in the colony she married and accompanied her husband to Whangarei 67 i years ago. Mr. Hoey had purchased | in 1552 a block of land in a native ; settlement at Okara, about half a mile I from tlio dozen houses which formed j tho scattered settlement of Wliangaroi. I Mrs. Hoey with her husband founded f»0 years ago the first commercial orchards in the North. Except for a brief experience of the Thames goldtields during the rush and a trip to Britain after her husband’s ueath 26 years ago. Mrs. Hoey has lived in Whangarei for 67 years. She lias four children living. Messrs. Henrv and William, of Okara. Whangarei; Mrs. Howie, who lives with her mother, and a married daughter in Australia.
