THE AMATEURS

The events which were scheduled to be decided last evening at the Domain had again to be postponed on' account of the weather. Although it cleared Up before the race was timed to start, the track was in such a condition to warrant the officials of the Manukau Club declaring the programme off. This makes the third occasion on which postponement of competitions has occurred during the new track season. With the Lynndale Club having a grand carnival on December 7, at which a number of cycle races are included, the amateurs will miss the mid-week tryouts. G. M. Lethaby will now be promoted to senior ranks, being over the agelimit of a junior. He leaves behind him a good record. As stated in these notes last week, his fine finishing effort stamped him as a good performer. Senior members will not need to take him cheaply, as he rides with plenty of confidence being at his best when the race is hardest. * * * It should not be long now before the Western Springs track will be in use for cyclists. Should meetings be held there, as there is every reason to anticipate they will, the sport should receive a further boost. Although there has been a lull in cycling circles during the two previous seasons, last year saw a revival of the sport. Many new members have been enrolled. Races have been well patronised by competitors, while the scheme of running off junior races has been a success. Riders have been in training on the new track. All express their approval of it and are looking forward to the official opening. Training conditions are lax at present, there being many non-members riding round on the circuit. This will be rectified when the caretaker takes over.

Weather permitting, the races will be held next Wednesday evening. With the Christmas carnivals now close at hand advantage should be taken of these events.
