FROM COOK TO CHEF

TROUBLE THROUGH CHANGE OF QUARTERS

DESERTED FROM RANANGA Changing the ship's galley tor the hotel kitchen and his title ot cook to that ot chef, Philip William Chilman left the ship Rananga without an explanation when the vessel was last at Auckland. Chilman, a chef aged 35, was charged at the Police Court this morning with deserting from the ship on November 4. He pleaded not guilty. Mr. F. M. Dougherty, Auckland agent for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, said that Chilman had signed on at Glasgow for the round trip. He had deserted at Auckland and the company had had some difficulty in filling his place. They had to pay the substitute an extra pound a week. The company had assisted Chilman's family on a voyage to England. Chilman’s explanation was that he had signed on at Auckland and had a right to be returned. He had asked the captain if he could be paid off when the vessel touched at Auckland. Mr. Dougherty admitted that Chilman had signed on at Auckland, but that was not on the Rananga. It was on another of the company’s boats. The man had signed on the Rananga at Glasgow for the round trip. Chilman was ordered to pay £2 10s expenses and to forfeit two days’ pay due to him. The magistrate, Mr. F. Iv. Hunt, S.M., remarked that he was liable to 14 days’ imprisonment.
