HIGH PRESSURE SELLING
LAST NIGHT’S WOOL SALE
AUCKLAND RECORDS MADE Four hundred and sixty-seven lots in 35 minutes—an average of one in approximately 4.5 seconds. When the man in the street realises that in putting up that selling record at last evening's Auckland wool sale, Mr. J. S. Duke, auctioneer for the New Zeeland Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.. Ltd., had to deal with disputes and go back over odd lines, some idea can be gained of the speed with which it is possible for a smart auctioneer and a responsive bench of buyers to clear up a wool sale catalogue. Several Auckland selling records must have been broken at last evening's sale, when a total of over 17,000 bales was sold in less than four and a-half hours. The sale opened at 7.30, and finished at midnight, with one short break about ten o’clock. The sale tended to drag slightly at the opening, when a comparatively big percentage of the offering was passed in, but buyers quickly warmed up to their job, and by the time Mr. Duke took the rostrum one lot would not be disposed of before buyers were screaming and yelling bids ,on the next. Up to certain limits bidding was keen and animated throughout. Auctioneers who wielded the hammer at last night’s sale were Messrs. B. J. Marquet (Farmers’ Auctioneering Co.). J. E. S. Duke (New Zealand Loan Co.), J. B. Moodie (Dalgety and Co., in conjunction with the North Auckland Farmers'). E. H. Binney (Abraham and Williams), and C. G. Brookes (Alfred Buckland and Sons).
Approximately £200,000 should go out. to Auckland woolgrowers as a result within the next week or so. Details of the sale appear on. page 10.
