ROMANCE AND COLOUR
“DESERT SONG’S” POPULARITY
Romance, desert sounds, moonlight, brilliant colours and haunting melodies easily catch popular imagination, and Aucklanders have not escaped the enchantment. “The Desert Song” is drawing crowded houses to His Majesty’s Theatre, where this melodious and spectacular musical play continues its successful season. Not only is “The Desert Song” a bright and tuneful spectacle, but it also possesses something quite tangible in the way of a plot. Marie Bremner’s winsome manner and softly gracious presence pervade the play with a happy charm. Lance Fairfax’s rich voice and manly bearing are striking attributes of the production. Herbert Mundin’s merry quips and laughable postures and grimaces keep the tide of humour running. Miss Renee Murphy is a vivacious counterfoil. The Oriental dressing and general ensemble at times is strikingly effective. “The Desert Song” will be played again this evening.
Dennis King, former light opera favourite, plays the featured role of Villon in the film version of "The Vagabond King. ’
