HAIL LIKE HENS’ EGGS
ROAD-WORKER KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS NEW SOUTH WALES DAMAGE Reed. 10.10 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. A disastrous hailstorm between Wauchope and Port Macquarie ruined crops, stripped foliage from trees, and killed sheep and poultry. The hail was as large as hens’ eggs. Pieces of ice like saucers also fell. A man working with a road gang was stunned by a jagged lump of ice. Two men were sheltering under a tree. The hail became so heavy that they decided to find a fresh refuge. They had just moved when the tree was struck by lightning and reduced to matchwood. Hail was piled 18 inches deep in many places.
