Bookmaker Pays His Second Fine for 1929
EACH TIME £IOO VISITOR FINED £5 “He was fined £IOO about seven months ago,” said Chief - Detective Hammond, when Robert Francis Bennett was fined £IOO at the Police Court this morning for keeping premises known as 25 Swanson Chambers as a common gaming-house. Bennett, who was arrested by Detective Nalder, pleaded guilty, and the chief-detective said that he had already been fined once this year. Bennett: And a pretty stiff one too. The chief-detective assured the j bench that there was no suggestion of j accused not meeting his obligations. He had been fined £25 for trespas-1 sing at Takapuna. Bennett was j given until Monday to pay. Frederick James ’ Dryland. who J pleaded guilty to being unlawfully j found on the premises, was fined £5. • “I think he has been here before also j hut he is not the assistant,” remarked ■ the chief-detective.
