ROLL OF HONOUR

QUICK RESPONSE MEETS ! APPEAL FOR FUNDS SUBSCRIPTION LISTS OPENED Already over £6OO has been raised for the fund to provide a roll of honour in the War Memorial M useum. • sociation launched the appeal yester- ! day and the response was instantaneous. Mr. E. 11. Sharp, secretary of the as- 1 » sociation. stated this morning that ~ 4.000 will be required to complete! the roll of honour. It is estimated that j the cost of engraving: each name will j be approximately £l. On Tuesday a. public meeting will J I be held in the Chamber of Commerce ! i rooms to elect a citizens’ committee to j : handle the funds. Letters have been j sent to representative bodies in the ! City asking them to attend. The Returned Soldiers’ Association has forwarded 44 telegrams to the j Mayors of provincial towns asking j them if they will open lists for the j fund, and to forward the names of all j deceased soldiers from their particu- j lar towns and districts. A start with the compilation of the j roll has already been made by the association, and this morning over 2,000 names had been obtained. It is proposed to place the names of all Auckland men, whether they fought with tlio Auckland Regiment or not, on the completed list. “Our hope of obtaining the required sum for the roll of honour is well founded,” said Mr. Sharp this morning. } : “I have had a number of letters con- j | taming subscriptions this morning and i ! numberless rings on the telephone.” ] He stated that the Auckland Mounted j Rifles had guaranteed the sum of £250. j representing £1 for every man of the J ! regiment who was killed or died <*n j I active service. The fund is distinct from the Memj orial Committee or the Auckland Insti- j j tute, neither of which has anything to j ! do with the control of it. I The museum itself will be a general ! j memorial in its dignified magnificence, J but it is felt that something more per- i sonal is wanted to perpetuate the j names of the men who died in the great struggle. The decision to have a i roll of honour has been made by the | Returned Soldiers Association. The Sun will acknowledge all contrij butions to the fund and any subscrip- ! tions forwarded to this office will be j handed to the Returned Soldiers’ As* j sociation. Several individual funds ! have been opened and a personal can- ! vass is being made. j This morning the following sums had j been received by the secretary of the i Returned Soldiers’ Association.

R.S.A’S GOOD WORK. NEW MEMBERS JOIN UP This morning Mr. Sharp obtained two letters from ex-soldiers asking to become members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. This was proof of the good work j which is being done, and which is j receiving the appreciation of the pub- I lie. The present appeal is bringing i more members to the association, and it is expected that this year’s membership will be much bigger than last. Old soldiers now realise that the Returned Soldiers’ Association is doing a great deal of work in a quiet way, and many are showing their appreciation of the association's effort. by joining the organisation. Next Friday, at 11.30 a.m., his Excellency the Governor-General will meet the executive of the association to say good-bye to them before lie j leaves New Zealand.
