MOTOR-CYCLE DEAL
ILLEGAL SALE LEADS TO COURT GUILTY OF THF.FT Recommended by the probation officer for lenient treatment, Nelson Mayes was admitted to two years’ probation after pleading guilty to a charge of theft at the Police Court this morning. Mayes, aged 20, was charged with the theft of a motor-cycle valued at £32 10s at’ Thames on December 17 of last year. Chief-Detective Hammond said that accused had paid £1 deposit on the machine which he had bought from Neal Motors, Ltd., at Hamilton. He held it on the hire-purchase system. Later he sold the motor-cycle to Stanley William Donkin at Thames for £25. Mayes had then paid Neal Motors another £6, but said nothing of the sale. It was a considerable time before the company made the discovery and then Donkin, to retain the bicycle, paid over the money owing on it, which was more than £2O. Mayes was a young man with a maintenance order against him in respect of his wife, from whom he was separated. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: I don’t suppose he keeps up the order. The Chief-Detective: I am not in a position to say that. Mayes was ordered to make restitution of £22 to Donkin.
