Fat stock prices at the principal selling centres throughout New Zealand yesterday showed a tendency to contract to .evels more in accord with the export parity. The store market appears to be holding fairly steady. Tito rains of the past thro.- or four weeks, which have been fairly general throughout the North Island, have had on the opening of the freezing season. Lambs are not coming forward ns freely as earlier prospects indicated. In Poverty Bay the works have not yet commenced j operations; in Hawke’s Boy the numbers of lambs coming forward are j _ negligible and practically the same i : position is recorded in Auckland. Two I lor three weeks of line weather are j now needed to put the season in full ; ! swing. i Export prices published last week, in wijieh best quality lamb under 361 b j was quoted at Sd, remain unchanged. ; Yesterday’s Westfield Market At Westfield yesterday an average yarding of slightly over 600 head of ! l'at cattle met with a steady demand. ! extra choice ox selling at up to 42s a , hundred, and best cow and heifer to ■39 s. The yarding, was drawn from most parts of the province and the j quality, generally, was good. Heavy weigh t cattle were short yarded, but j ! the demand for this class of beast was , not keen. The calf offering comprised a big . percentage of bucket-fed sorts which, ! when killed and dressed, would not ■ turn the scales at very high weights. * • The market, generally, was down on ! j late rates. Wellington Market ! At the Johnsonville yards yesterday j there was a full yarding of all classes of stock. The quality of both sheep and cattle was good. Cattle met with a ready sale at prices on a par with last week’s rates. Wethers sold at late rates, but ewes suffered a decline to tlie extent of 2s a head. Hoggets were penned in small numbers, and met with keen demand. Lambs were yarded in larger numbers than usual, and a total clearance was effected at ls to ls Od decline. Prices were:—Extra heavy bullocks, £l7 to £18; heavy bullocks, £l4 10s t to £l6 10s; light cows, £6 5s to £7: 1 extra heavy heifers. £l4 12s Gd to £ls; j heavy heifers, £l3 to £l4; medium I heifers, £9 10s to £9 17s Gd: runners, I £7 17s Gd: vealers. £2 14s to £6; j heavy shorn wethers, 28s 6d to 30s; , medium shorn wethers, 26s 3d to 27s Gd: heavy shorn young ewes, 24s 3d; | heavy shorn ewes, 21s to 225; woolly 1 hoggets, 27s Dd. Extra heavy shorn ! hoggets, 27s to 27s 6d: lambs. 21s 6d Easier Market at Addington A feature of the Addington market j today was a decline in values in all four “fat” sections—fat cattle. fat | sheep, fat pigs and fat lambs. The fall in beef and mutton prices was a big j one. An entry of 920 fat lambs sold at from Bid to 9d a lb. Fat sheep sold on a falling market, wethers, at the | close, being 2s a head down on last week’s* rates; ewes were easier by 3s a head. Exti-a. prime wethers made up to 33s a head: extra prime ewes to 2Ss Gd a head. An entry of 30G head of fat cattle included over 100 from the North Island. Steers and cows were down by 30s a head: heifers by 20s a bead. Extra choice beef made to 44s a hundred; good medium weight prime beef brought 39s to 41s a hundred; good cow beef, to 375. In the fat pig section porkers averaged 7id to Sd a lb; baeoners, 6:,'d to 7d a lb.
