DISTINGUISHED SURGEON
ARRIVAL IN AUCKLAND “I am early Victorian because I lived . through that, period,” said Sir Charles Ballance, K.C.M.G., C. 8.. M.V.0., this morning. ; Despite his 73 years he is a remarkj ably alert and active man. Sir Charles ; has been spending the last six months | in Australia and is now oil his way | back to England on the Aorangj. I This distinguished surgeon has had ian interesting life. He attended the : Kaiser and his family for some years ! and could probably tell some interesting stories of Court life in Berlin if he wished to. For four ye/irs he was stationed at various parts of the Mediterranean as consulting surgeon to the British Forces. “Yes, and I’ve never been ! warm since,” was another of his coni Cessions this morning. Sir Charles is an ardent Imperiali ist and he is convinced, after visiting j Australia, Egypt and India that the i progress and development of the world | and the contentment of the peoples of the Empire now depends on the close | co-operation between every section of j the Dominions and British colonies. No British Government, should place ! the League of British Peoples second in importance to the League of | Nations —the British peoples should j come first. On his way back to England Sir j Charles will deliver a series of lecj tures in America and when he j reaches Glasgow he will continue lecI luring there. j During his active life the distinguished surgeon has found time to write a number of important publications. These include “The Surgery of the Brain and Its Membrances,” “The Healing of Nerves,” “The Surgery of the Heart,” and “Essays on Surgery of Temporal Bone.”
