KING AT “JOURNEY’S END”
MANUSCRIPT OF WAR PLAY BOUGHT FOR NATION SUM OF £1,500 PAID LONDON, Thursday. King George and Queen Mary and the Duke and Duchess of York paid a surprise visit to the play “Journey’s End” this evening, it. was the King’s fourth visit to a theatre this week. Ilis Majesty sent for the author, Mr. R. C. Sherriff, after the second act. He told him he found the play most interesting, and was enjoying it very much. He questioned Mr. Sherriff about the production of his play abroad, particularly its treatment by the German producers. Mr. Sherriff earlier in the evening had been present at the League of Nations dinner at Guildhall, where the manuscript of “Journey’s End" was sold by auction. Sir James Barrie began the bidding with an offer of £SOO. The Lord Mayor, Sir W. Waterlow, bid £1,200. It was knocked down to Sir Walter Lawrence for £1,500, Sir Walter, who is a, keen supporter of the League of Nations, announced that lie had bought the manuscript to be preserved for the nation. The auctioneer disclosed the fact that the entire company of “Journey’s End” had offered a week’s salary for the manuscript, but had been tolcl that it was not enough.
