EXPLORER REACHES HIS ANTARCTIC BASE TWO AIRPLANES SECURE Reed. 1.35 p.m. LONDON, Thursday. In a copyright message from Deception Island, Sir Hubert Wilkins says:—“One lone iceberg greeted us as we arrived through snow-squalls at the Antarctic base. Our two Lockhead planes, the Los Angeles and the San Francisco, were awaiting us in their winter clothing, having outridden the storms, sleet, winds and 50 degrees below zero. Apparently they were as secure and Jit as when we left them eight months ago. After a fine trip from Montevideo, we approached Deception Island with caution, through heavy seas. After outriding a storm we entered the bay only just in time. Two hours later night came ana ice blocked the entrance we had traversed. The men are now mooring the ship in the half darkness/’
