NOBEL LITERARY PRIZE
AUSTRIAN AUTHOR CHOSEN FOR HONOUR Reed. 10 a.m. STOCKHOLM, Tues. The Nobel prize for literature lias j been awarded to Thomas Mann, the well-known Austrian author. Thomas Mann is a famous Austrian novelist who is regarded as one of! the greatest of modern stylists. He is a man of extreme delicacy and subtlety : of mind. His best known works : are “Death in Venice,” “His Royal Highness,” “The Buddenbrooks,” “Frederick and the Great Coalition,” and “Antonio Kruger.” In the years of war, as a relaxation from more serious work and the worries of the period, he wrote “Bashan and I,” the study of a man’s attachment for his dog, which has been classed as one of the most delightful animal studies ever penned. This has been translated into English. Since the war, Mann’s popularity has increased tremendously, and the award of the Nobel i Prize for Literature will be regarded j in literary circles abroad as a fitting I tribute to masterly work.
