WITH THE BOY SCOUTS
The New Zealand representatives to the Scout Jamboree in England have now returned to the Dominion, after an adventurous and instructive time abroad. They arrived in Wellington yesterday by the Ulimaroa and were welcomed by the Scout authorities of the capital city. * * * On tho eve of his departure on a holiday visit to Christchurch, District Scoutmaster Dyer was the guest of honour at a Rover meeting held last Wednesday at the home of Mr. C. Ruxton Bach, the occasion being his initiation into the Rovers. Messrs. W. Taylor and D. Watts acted as sponsors. • • • Deerfoot forwards the following St. Aidan’s news. A week-end camp for Scouts of this troop was held on November 2: “A short ride in the train and then a trek across the hills to French Bay. The weather was just right for the party of nine St. Aidan’s Scouts who camped at French Bay during the week-end. The first night was spent in telling yarns round the camp-fire, and a fine swim was enjoyed in the morning. Games were played in the bush, and on the beach, and after a happy time the boys . entrained for home. “A very successful church parade was held by St. Aidan’s Troop last Sunday morning. The Guide Company also attended. The Rev’ Coleman delivered a very fine address, especially adapted to fit the occasion, and he spoke of the Relief of Mafeking and Baden Powell’s founding of the Movement. “Next Saturday the St. Aidan’6 Scouts will be having First Class tests at Lake St. John. ” * * * No. 1 Division, Grey Eagle reports; “A Scouters’ meeting was held at West Street last Wednesday, important business being dealt with. There was a fair attendance. “It was decided to hold a Sports Day for Scouts in the above Division about December 14. “Further it was decided to hold no ! more Scouter’s meeting’s for the Divis- | ion until after the holidays. | Mr. Fred. E. Walls writes: “A Patrol of Rovers has been formed in connection with the West Street [ Church of Christ Troop. | “Mr. H. Phethean has been appointed ; Rover Mate, and he entertained the I members of tlie Patrol last Sunday.
The Edendale Cubmaster sends the following account of the Cubs’ Guy Fawkes night celebrations: “The Cubmaster”s place v.as a scene of great activity on November 5, when the Edendale Cubs were preparing a bonfire to be lit that evening. “At 7.30 p.m. two ‘Guys,’ brought by Cubs Steven and Trebilcock, were placed on top of the fire, which was lit by the Cubmaster and, after the tire had burned low and the fireworks were disposed of. the Cubs gave an open-air concert of songs, recitations and choruses, some of which the onlookers joined in. “We were pleased to see so many interested parents and members of the committee who enjoyed the fireworks as much as the Cubs themselves “The evening concluded with the Grand Howl and cheers from the Cubs.”
