The Care of the Car ZIG-ZAGGING WHEELS ‘•Shimmy’’ or zig-zagging wheels can be overcome by having the axle set firmly and the bushing snugly adj justed. The condition is caused by ; loosening wheel bearings as well as by steering knuckles and pinions, the ; wheels slap back and forth over rough roads quickly ruining the tyres. The j tyre treads will soon show uneven I places on the surface, wearing away ! as though the rubber was soft. Underj inflation under these conditions aggravates the trouble. BROKEN PUSH-ROD REPAIR j In the event of the push-rod of an i overhead inlet valve breaking during I a journey it is sometimes possible to . ! finish the run by arranging for the j valve to work autpmatically. This is | done by attaching one end of an : j auxiliary spring to the push-rod end of the rocker, the other end I" in " | secured to some convenient part of 1 I tlie engine or chassis, so that it acts against the ordinary valve spring. Should it coil spring not be available strong elastic may be used. The tension of the extra spring should be arranged so that the valve just closes but may be pushed open with one finger. When the engine is running the suction produced on the induction stroke will be sufficient- to open the valve, while at the bottom of the stroke the valve will automatically close. SUBSTITUTE FOR A MATCH There is never any need to go without a light for a fire. Take a piece of waste or rag, and after saturating it in petrol, tie it to the end of a screwdriver. Next detach a plug lead and hold it close to the plug. If the waste is held close enough to the spark, it will become ignited.
