CHRISTMAS NOVELTIES ARTS AND CRAFTS 1 A very interesting 1 and varied collection of attractive novelties was displayed by the arts and crafts section i of the New Zealand League of Penwomen at the club rooms on Friday. Visitors seeking something new and unusual for Christmas gifts found ! much to tempt them. j Those who presided over the vari- | ous stalls were as follow: Mrs. X. FT Peacocke, pewter, raflia and leather work; Mrs. Webber, handpainted china; Airs. Buchanan, worked leather, marquetry and barbolo work; Mrs. Carling, weaving display; Miss Gardner, art pottery; Miss E. G. Peacocke. raffia work; the Misses Melville, brass, pewter and leather work; Miss M. Spicer, sealing-wax and barbolo display; Miss Burton, hand-made rug. WATER-COLO UR DIS PEA Y One of the most interesting features of the exhibition was the display of charming water-colours, the artists represented including:—Mrs. Spicer, Airs. Fletcher, Airs. Kyburn, Airs. R. Peacocke, Airs. Raynor, Airs. Carr. Mrs. Wright, Airs. Tonkin. Miss O. Lloyd, Aliss Harrison Smith, Aiiss Garden Alartin, Aliss Burton and Aliss Goodfellow. ‘ Airs. Harrison Smith also showed some charming pictures of native flowers, and Airs. Brownlee a very successful portrait of her son, while Alisp Whitelaw’s contribution was an interesting charcoal study of a head. Aliss Connie Lloyd’s panel of attractive portraits also excited much interest and Aliss -Joy Porter’s display of daintily finished art calendars was particularly seasonable. During the evening a programme of delightful musical and elocutionary items, arranged by Mrs. Nello Porter, added very considerably to the pleasure of those present. Airs. King contributed two Maori songs and ATrs. Nello Porter herself also gave vocal items. Aliss Nancy No ye and Aliss Patty Gihnour, gold medallists in the competitions, gave several graceful fancy dances and elocutionary items, and Aliss Simpson two flute selections, while little Leila Bloy was particularly successful in two violin solos.-
