HEUGHAN, ACTOR-SINGER
PRAISE BY MELBOURNE “ARGUS” "Writing of the Heughan concerts, the “Argus” (Melbourne) said recently: “A feast of music was provided by Mr. Heughan and his two collaborators at the concert given last night in tiie Town Hall. Mr. Heughan himself is, of course, a tower of strength, lie is in his own way a genius. He makes the most masterly use of gestures and movement. Over and over ! again at this first concert of the pres- j ent season. lie showed that lie is { rightly described by the unusual title 1 of •actor-singer.’ A natural grace and j dignity are supplemented by a power- ! ful sense of drama and romance and ; reality. Mr. Heughan does not aim at merely sensuous beauty of tone. Not for him the emptiness and perversity of the people who indulge in “art for art's sake.’ Rather must he be ranked with those finer artists who set out deliberately to use art for sincere expression. The human interest is strong in all that Mr. Heughan j does, and this feature is heightened j and intensified by the delightful little descriptions which the singer gives, j before each item. Mr. Heughan is j an admirable speaker, clear and nat- ! ural, and attractive and persuasive.” Two concerts will be given in the j Town Hall next Saturday and Monday. ‘ This will be the last appearance in j Xew Zealand of Mr. Heughan and bis < associates before leaving for Canada • and the United States of America.
