DROWNING AT MOTUIHI
VALIANT EFFORTS MADE BY COMPANIONS YOUNG MAN COLLAPSES Collapsing while swimming v Motuihi Island on Sunday afternoon Maurice Shelton, a ;ed I‘*. of C. 92 New North Road. Kingsland. was drowned Shelton, who was a member of the Auckland division of the St. John Ambulance, and on duty at the island at the time, went down to the beach with a companion. Mr. Arthur Leslie McCarthy, also a member of the ambulance corps, ami entered the water off the north-east side shortly after lunch. picnickers on shore saw* he was missing a short time after he had entered the water. The alarm was immediately raised, and other bathers, headed by Mr Cartliy. made valiant attempts to recover the body. A net was then obtained from the island caretaker, and the water was dragged. The body was found 20 minutes after Shelton had been misled. The body was taken ashore, and artificial respiration was applied for nearly three hours, but all efforts were in vain. By the time of a doc tor’s arrival it was evident that Shelton was dead. An inquest was opened before Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.. coroner, yesterday and was adjourned sine die.
