TRAPPED IN GUN WHEEL

LIEUTENANT’S ORDEAL AT TATTOO NOT SERIOUSLY INJURED Press Association PALMERSTON N., Friday. Au unusual accident occurred during the military tattoo at the spring show this evening when Lieutenant L. J. Lovelock, officer commanding the Seventh Battery, N.Z.F.A., became entangled in a wheel of a moving limber and in full view of a large crowd was whirled round in the spokes.

The gun team, which with another team, was taking part in a manoeuvre was travelling at full speed when the accident occurred. The gun was wheeling to the right when Lieutenant Lovelock, who was riding on the inside of the curve, suddenly lost Ijis seat and before the eyes of the horrified crowd was dragged by the wheel of the limber. He appeared in imminent danger of death by having his head crushed under the wheel, but when the team was pulled up he was found to have had a miraculous escape.

Lieutenant Lovelock was quickly extricated and carried off tlie ground where he was attended by a doctor who arrived in response to a call by the radio announcer. The injured man’s parents, who were helpless spectators of the accident, rushed on to the ground and were present when he was removed by car to the public hospital.

Examination showed that his injuries were not as serious >as was at first feared, consisting of general shock and a deep cut over the left eye. No bones were broken and his eyesight will not be impaired. The accident was caused, by Lieutenant lovelock’s horse shying at a critical moment and throwing him against the wheel.
