Hill; secretary and treasurer, Miss M. Lambert; committee, Rev. C. R. Taylor, Miss Brew and Mrs. Lawrence. The' president, in declaring the newly-finished court open, referred to the church’s indebtedness to Messrs. Lawrence and Hill for their interest in the matter. Mrs. Hill played the first ball over the net. * * * The Taumarunui Borough Council has recently realised that red tape can be very strong. The borough possesses adjoining lands belonging to the electricity department and to the abattoir department, and it is desired to transfer a portion of the former to the latter for the purpose of erecting a residence for the abattoir manager. Owing to legal technicalities this cannot be done until special legislation has been secured. On the advice of the borough and Municipal Association solicitors, the council has resolved to appeal for the necessary authority to be enacted this session. * * • At the monthly meeting of the school committee advice was received that the report of the visiting inspectors, Messrs. M. Priestly and F. East, disclosed that the work being done was satisfactory in every respect. Mr. J. H. Lynskey reported that the average attendance at the secondary department for the month was 124 (roll 138); and in the primary department 415 (roll 454).
At its fortnightly meeting the Taumarunui Borough Council'resolved to grant the Manunui Town Board a reduction of £32 9s 5d off its electricity account, owing to the date of commencing consumption not coinciding with the date agreed on. The council received a letter from Mr. F. Langstone, M.P., stating that a sum of money had been authorised for the erection of a new post office at Taumarunui, and it was decided to reply expressing the council’s thanks.
The Domain Board considered the annual lease charges for sports clubs, and resolved to charge the Tennis Club £7 10s and the Bowling Club £5, as heretofore. C. Bishara sought to have the figures evened, but could not gain sufficient support, the contention being that the Bowling Club had heavier overhead expenses to# maintain, and should be assisted as far as possible to meet them in the interests of th© town.
