CAUGHT WITH BETS

MAORI FINED £SO HONEST IN DEALINGS (Special to THE SUN) ROTORUA, Thursday. Breaches of the Gaming Act were admitted by Horl Mau (Mr. Carter) in the Police Court before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., today. Sergeant Hogan said that he found defendant with a book of bets in his hand. He admitted that he had been making bets on totalisator odds. The sergeant pointed out that accused had been convicted on two previous occasions for similar offences. He had been open and above board and given no trouble. Mr. Carter said it was difficult to say anything in mitigation in such a case. He had been frank and owned up. The accused was honest in his dealings with his clients. The magistrate convicted accused on one charge and fined him £2O with 10s costs and on the second imposed a fine of £3O, with costs 10s. A charge of bookmaking was withdrawn.
